The Three Idiot Monkeys, 5m x 1m, Ver 2, 2014-21

This GIGATAGE image is based on the Three wise monkeys, this is a Japanese pictorial maxim, which embodies "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil". Mizaru, covers his eyes and sees no evil; Kikazaru, covers his ears, and hears no evil; and Iwazaru, covering his mouth, and speaks no evil.

Confucius’ Code of Conduct

There is a similar phrase that exists in Chinese, in the late Analects of Confucius from 2nd to 4th century B.C.: "Look not at what is contrary to propriety; listen not to what is contrary to propriety; speak not what is contrary to propriety; make no movement which is contrary to propriety" (非禮勿視,非禮勿聽,非禮勿言,非禮動). Some believe that this inspired the pictorial maxim when it arrived in Japan.

As responce to this idea, in this GIGATAGE image all the characters in this immense work have had one of their senses altered or taken away to replicate a similar notion.
